Civil War
Here I am dressed as an infantry soldier from an Indiana regiment during the Civil War. This picture was taken the day I participated in my first Civil Warre-enactment. The event was Indiana Civil War Days, held each June at Billie Creek Village, near Rockville, Indiana. Many people do not know that Indiana was one of only two places in the North during the Civil War to have had a battle fought. The most famous of all was the battle of Gettysburg, Pennslyvania fought July 1-3, 1863. The other, much lesser known battle was fought in Corydon, Indiana, six days later. Here the Indiana Home Guard turned in a lackluster performance attempting to protect lives and property against Morgan's Raiders. An event held in Scottsburg, Indiana each July specifically re-enacts this "raid".
During my day at Rockville, I woke up cold, wet, tired, and hungry on the ground next to an extinguished campfire. I breakfasted on cold coffee, burnt pig fat, and hard biscuit. I then fell in with some seasoned soldiers who did their best to teach me the Manual of Arms and prepare me for the upcoming battle. I was very green, but enthusiastic. I missed drill with the other regiments to sneak off and meet with Sasha and Clara one last time before battle. It was during this meeting that this picture was taken. A short time later I re-joined my boys, and we quickly formed into columns and marched towards the sounds and smells of cannon and musket fire.
